Dude, where’s my flying car? (or Modern Life is Rubbish)

Nasa has announced that we’re going back to the moon. We are also going to be going to Mars. This is great news, but not before time. It’s been nearly 40 years, and no one is getting any younger. Weren’t we meant to be colonizing far-distant planets by now?
I grew up on a lot of 1950s and 1960s re-runs, and I was conned into believing they genuinely predicted the future. I was the most convinced by The Jetsons. While I am glad that the use of video phones didn’t take off like they predicted, there are still many elements of the Jetson lifestyle I wish were true.
Flying cars – I genuinely believe part of the reason I never learnt how to drive was because there are no flying cars. What’s the point of driving a normal road-going vehicle? We were promised flying cars in the 21st century, and I want one. They’re a lot cooler looking than normal cars, and would probably get you everywhere twice as fast.
Robot maids – I saw this film clip from this 50s expo of the future. There was this giant robot arm that was the servant of Mr. and Mrs. 2000. The robot arm did everything. It cooked. It cleaned. It did the laundry. The film promised that while Mr. 2000 went to work, Mrs. 2000 would have nothing to do but watch her robot arm take care of all the household work. This should be my life. I would be fantastic at watching my robot arm do all the work. I’d make up some vodka martinis and get in a box of chocolates. It would be great.
Transporters - Admittedly no real scientific person ever promised these, they’re only used in Star Trek. However, imagine how much easier your commute to work would be if all you had to do every morning was get transported there. You could sleep in longer because you would only have to leave yourself 30 seconds to get to work in time. It’s the only form of transport that might be better than flying cars.
Silver space suits with white go-go boots and utility belts- I’m not sure if this outfit is meant to have any practical purpose in the future but it looks darn cool, and I think I would look really good in it.
